a wide-angle view of greenhouses set against a vibrant blue sky with fluffy white clouds

This Sunny Saturday

What an incredibly beautiful day it has been! Temps in the low 80s, a perfectly blue sky with white fluffy clouds, the quintessential early summer day. And it was a day full of activities for me.

I started at the Fulton farmer’s market. It’s been ages since I’ve been to the market, and this seemed like a perfect day to go. Vance had requested strawberries, so strawberries I did obtain, from Ingersoll Farms, who always have delicious produce. I also obtained some Italian, breakfast, and chorizo sausage, and some farm-fresh eggs from Whippoorwill Farm. They always have really good meats and I make sure to grab something whenever I see them at a market.

There is a lot more than produce at the farmer’s market. Today there was a fire engine, a huge bounce house for the kids, and some really cool classic cars.

After the farmer’s market it was off to Crazy Daisies in Syracuse with my mother for their Summer Art Market. What a great place they have! I’ve seen their events on Facebook and have been meaning to check them out, and today was the perfect day. For today’s event their big greenhouse was chock full of vendors selling artwork, jewelry, clothing, sourdough, and so many other things. I loaded up on yummy sourdough bagels and breads from Breaking Bread Bakery (more on that later). I explored some of the other greenhouses with their beautiful flowers and hanging baskets. I didn’t get any today, but I would definitely make the drive there if I were in the market for some. The Garden Cafe was packed with hungry market-goers. Mom got a salad that she said was delicious. I passed on the food because I already had big plans for lunch.

And those plans involved a delicious gyro at Greek Fest! The festival is located at St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Church, a place I’m quite familiar with since I’m there every Tuesday evening at 7:00 for Spirit of Syracuse choir rehearsal. It was the first time Vance and I attended, and we were not disappointed. This thing is a well-oiled machine, from the shuttle buses bringing people in from the parking areas (in an air-conditioned motorcoach no less!) to the astonishingly well-run food lines. The wait time from ordering our food to picking it up? About ninety seconds. These folks run a tight ship!

The menu was extensive, the gyro was near perfection, and the goodies were plentiful, and we brought a bunch of them home. We will definitely be back next year!

After a long morning and afternoon we came home to relax. I filled the bird feeders since they were all empty (those squirrels manage to fool my baffles no matter what I do) and then I just sat out in the backyard enjoying the late-afternoon sun and the sounds of the birds who were flying around in the trees, but not brave enough to hit up the feeders while I was there. But this little guy was plenty brave. He was hanging out by the shed and did not seem bothered by my presence one bit. He sat there for probably fifteen minutes or so before hopping off to find somewhere else to hang out.

And of course there was ice cream at the end of the day. We went to Baldwinsville to one of our favorite ice cream stands, Bee-Licious. They have a standard line-up of soft and hard serve, but they also make their own hard ice cream flavors that are so good. I chose a simple soft serve twist, but had to have my waffle cone. They make their own waffle cones and they are simply the best waffle cones in the entire world, I will accept no arguments to the contrary because this is a hill I am willing to die on.

And that’s where this post was supposed to end. A full day of great experiences and memories made. And then we walked into the house and knew quite quickly that something was amiss. What you see below is one of the loaves of sourdough that I purchased earlier in the day. When we left the house to get ice cream, this loaf was unopened and sitting atop one of the kitchen counters. The empty bag and the two small remaining bits of the loaf were on the living room floor. We have no way of knowing for sure which dog was responsible for this, but my money is on Bailey. He was hiding upstairs looking incredibly guilty and acting weird. But I have no doubt that Millie joined in the feast once the heist had been completed. So I am just going to have to assume that this bread was as delicious as it looked in the package.
